Sorry — no new food stalls.

If existing stallholders leave, we have no intention to replace them at this stage. If you'd still like to enquire about bottled goods or take-home foods, please read on.

Why we limit food

Browns Bay is already spoiled for choice.

Three cafés border the market and two more are within a minute's walk — ample choices for eat-on-site food and drinks.

For fruit and vegetables, we have two greengrocers and two supermarkets all bordering the market. Combined with our fruit-and-vegetable stallholders who trade 48 weeks a year, we already offer more than enough options to our customers.

If any current food stallholders leave, we have no intention at this stage of replacing them.

Definition

What do we mean by "food"?

If your product fits any of these categories, it's considered food under our rules and Auckland Council regulations.

  • Food cooked at the market

  • Fruit & vegetables

  • Honey

  • Eggs

  • Food prepared offsite to be eaten at the market

  • Pre-packaged foods (including cheese, meat and fish)

  • Seasonal food or produce

  • Food assembled at the market — designer sandwiches, filled rolls, etc.

But mine is different…

It's probably not — please review the list above. If you believe your product sits outside food regulations entirely, get in touch and we'll help clarify.

Note that fundraisers and College Business Studies groups may sell specific food items on approval. See fundraising or business studies for details.

Official regulations

Food licensing & regulations.

If you're approved as a food seller or fundraiser selling food, you'll need to follow Auckland Council and Ministry of Primary Industries rules.

On the day

Rubbish, cookers & the clean-up.

Rubbish & your 120L bin

Food stall holders are required under council regulations to provide a suitable rubbish receptacle for clients — typically a 60-litre bin or bag at a minimum, with many using a 120L wheelie bin.

You must provide that bin for market patrons and take the rubbish with you when you leave.

As customers move between stalls they'll deposit rubbish from other stalls in your bin. Please don't get upset — remember your customers' rubbish ends up in other stall holders' bins too.

Gas cookers & on-site cooking

We do not allow on-site cooking or reheating of any food at the market, unless you are a regular food vendor.

This applies to all fundraisers too — no sausage sizzles or barbecues. See fundraising rules.

Pack-down & timing

The market ends at midday. You need to vacate the area by 12:30pm and ensure all rubbish is removed from your site.
