Why us

Market learning, not textbook learning.

Nothing teaches pricing, customer service, visual merchandising and cash-handling quite like a Sunday morning at a real market. Our stallholders will happily share what works, and your students will leave with a story — and maybe a profit — to show for it.

We welcome approved student groups across the year. Because we're run by volunteers and have limited space, we ask for a bit of planning — drop us a line well before your preferred Sunday.

Highlights

What students take away.

Real customers

Thousands of locals walk through the market each Sunday. It's the fastest feedback loop a young entrepreneur will get.

Pricing & maths

Cost of goods, margins, change-giving, float management and end-of-day reconciliation — all for real.

Visual merchandising

How your stall looks makes or breaks the day. Students learn about layout, signage, display height and eye-catching presentation.

Measurable results

Takings vs. stock vs. hours worked — everything you need for a real-world report, business plan or reflection.

Time & team management

Setup, shifts, pack-down — running a stall teaches planning and collaboration in a way a classroom can't.

Approved food & product

Student groups may sell specific food items on approval — perfect for Young Enterprise Scheme (YES) style projects. See food rules.

How it works

Bringing your class to the market.

1. Teachers — get in touch first

Email admin@brownsbaymarket.co.nz with your school, the course/year level, approximate number of students and a couple of Sundays that would suit. We'll work together to find a date.

We may ask for a brief official request on school letterhead prior to the preferred date.

2. Decide what you'll sell

All the usual market rules apply — hand-made, second-hand or approved product. If your students want to sell food, see food rules for details. We'll happily advise on pricing and set-up.

3. Setup & pack-down

Setup is between 5:30am and 6:00am, and pack-down must be completed by 12:30pm. Please ensure at least one supervising adult is on the stall at all times.

4. Pay the site fee

Student groups pay a discounted rate on approval — we'll confirm pricing when we confirm your Sunday. Standard rates are the starting point.

5. Have a great morning!

Enjoy the day, take lots of notes, chat to other stallholders, and make sure to rotate roles — cash-handling, selling, re-stocking, signage — so every student gets the full experience.
